The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has officially charged 30 individuals in connection with the killing of Abu Sayed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRU), who became a symbol of last year’s July uprising.
Among those named is former BRU vice-chancellor Md Hasibur Rashid, along with 23 others for whom arrest warrants have now been issued. The court passed the order at around 11:50 AM on Wednesday.
The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury and including Justices Md Manzurul Basid and Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir, is overseeing the proceedings.
The tribunal previously accepted the prosecution’s charges on June 30. The accusations include murder, attempted murder, incitement, complicity, and command responsibility—each categorized under crimes against humanity.
Abu Sayed was fatally shot on July 16 of last year in Rangpur during a student protest against the government job quota system. His death, and the courage he displayed before it, galvanized the movement into a nationwide uprising that ultimately led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5.
Those currently in custody include former university proctor Shariful Islam, assistant registrar Rafiul Hasan Rasel, BRU staff member Anwar Parvez, assistant sub-inspector Amir Hossain, constable Sujan Chandra Roy, and Bangladesh Chhatra League activist Imran Chowdhury Akash.
The remaining 24 accused are still at large.
