At least 15 individuals were injured on Thursday after a group of recently dismissed employees of Al-Arafah Islami Bank allegedly attacked senior bank officials near the institution’s head office in Dhaka.

The incident occurred around 4:15pm near the Dainik Bangla intersection, as senior officials were preparing to leave the premises. According to bank representatives, the group of former staff members suddenly surrounded a vehicle carrying the bank’s head of Human Resources, Amir Hossain, and physically assaulted him.

Shahinur, a security guard who attempted to shield the HR official, suffered serious injuries. Police later intervened and rescued three Deputy Managing Directors (DMDs) from the scene, officials said.

Eyewitnesses reported that more than 100 dismissed employees, many carrying sticks, clashed with on-duty security personnel. Several guards were beaten while trying to prevent the violence from escalating.

The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Square Hospital, and Islami Bank Central Hospital for treatment.

Authorities said a formal complaint is being lodged at Paltan Police Station.

Tensions have been high since July 28, when a regulatory investigation led by Bangladesh Bank uncovered major irregularities in the bank’s hiring process. Following an internal review of 1,414 appointments, the bank terminated 547 employees who failed to meet criteria.
