Grameenphone and Robi Begin Commercial 5G Services in Bangladesh
For the first time in the country, fifth-generation mobile services have been launched commercially, with Grameenphone and Robi activating their networks on 1 September 2025.
Grameenphone’s Chief Executive, Yasir Azman, shared the announcement through the company’s official social media, confirming that 5G coverage is now available in all divisional headquarters. Meanwhile, Robi formally unveiled its service at its Dhaka corporate office.
“The arrival of 5G is a historic moment for Grameenphone and for Bangladesh,” Azman said. “This network will provide faster, more dependable service and unlock opportunities in innovation, entrepreneurship, and smart solutions that will guide the nation forward. Everything we do is for our customers, and today we take another big step together.”
At Robi’s launch ceremony, ICT Division Secretary Shish Haider Chowdhury described 5G as more than just speed, calling it “a gateway to economic expansion, jobs, education, healthcare, and the building of smart cities.”
Regulator BTRC’s Chairman, Major General (retd) Md Emdad ul Bari, noted that the development marks “a new chapter for the telecom sector,” urging operators to use the technology responsibly for the people’s benefit.
Robi’s Acting CEO, M Riyaaz Rasheed, added that the service will help push Bangladesh’s digital economy to the next level. “For the first time, our users can directly experience what the future of connectivity feels like,” he said.
