In the Chakrabarti area along the Nabinagar–Chandra highway, a massive pile of garbage has formed, spreading unbearable stench and making life difficult for pedestrians and nearby residents. The silence of the Manikganj Roads Division has only worsened the situation.

Locals allege that the misery stems largely from an unauthorized truck stand and several commercial establishments built illegally on highway land. The main figure accused in this matter is a man named Osman Gani, who has also been blamed for occupying government property belonging to the Roads and Highways Department.

To address the issue, the Manikganj Roads Division sent a letter on 20 August 2024 to the Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation and the District Commissioner. The letter claimed that dumping waste in this location was polluting the environment and posing a public health risk.

However, investigations later revealed that Gazipur City Corporation never authorized anyone—individuals or businesses—to dump waste there. Moreover, Osman Gani was not officially assigned any such responsibility. This raises a pressing question: why did the Roads Division write to Gazipur City Corporation in the first place?

When contacted, Executive Engineer Shahriar Alam of the Roads and Highways Department refused to speak to journalists at first. After repeated attempts, he finally responded with a single line: “No letter has come to my office from Gazipur City Corporation.” Reporters then asked why, if no correspondence was received, he had sent a letter blaming them. At that point, he walked away without answering.

The incident suggests that the Manikganj Roads Division has been attempting to cover up its own failure by shifting blame onto another institution. This tactic raises serious concerns among citizens about transparency and accountability within the department.
