Protests in Barcelona Over Israeli Attack on Gaza-Bound Aid Fleet

Tens of demonstrators took to the streets of Barcelona, Spain, to protest the Israeli military’s attack on the Global Sumud flotilla, a humanitarian fleet heading toward Gaza.

Organizers stated that the protest was in response to Israel’s military operation on the flotilla, which led to the detention of hundreds of human rights activists.

Meanwhile, more than 30 legal experts have urged UEFA, the European football governing body, to ban Israel and its clubs from all competitions. The call comes in light of Israel’s ongoing atrocities in Gaza.

The experts sent a letter on Thursday to UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, citing a recent United Nations investigation report that confirmed Israel’s acts of ethnic cleansing against Palestinians. The letter described banning Israel as “imperative.”

Football and Accountability

In their letter, the experts emphasized that UEFA and its member associations have a legal and moral obligation to uphold international law and called for an immediate and total ban on Israeli football.

Calls to isolate Israel from global football have grown louder in recent months. Supporters in cities such as Glasgow, Paris, Rome, and Bilbao have waved Palestinian flags in solidarity with Gaza.

The letter also highlighted the devastating impact on Gaza’s sports sector. Since Israel launched its military operation in Gaza in October 2023, at least 421 Palestinian footballers have been killed. Israeli airstrikes have systematically destroyed the territory’s football infrastructure, erasing opportunities for an entire generation of athletes and undermining the foundation of Palestinian sports.

The legal experts criticized the Israel Football Association (IFA) for failing to challenge these violations, arguing that its continued participation in UEFA competitions is unacceptable.

Signatories and Context

Signatories of the letter include Elisa von Joeden-Forzi, Executive Director of the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, as well as several former UN officials and international law scholars.

Israel’s national team is currently participating in the European World Cup qualifiers, and its clubs are competing in UEFA domestic tournaments. The experts insist that excluding Israel from international football competitions is now “essential.”

During the flotilla attack on Wednesday, several human rights activists, including Greta Thunberg and Thiago Avilas, were detained.

Supporters across Europe continue to demonstrate solidarity with Palestinians, waving flags and demanding accountability from both Israel and international institutions.
