Although photographer Shahidul Alam was expected to reach Gaza on Sunday, he had earlier indicated that the journey might take longer. This has led many to wonder — where exactly is he now, and how much longer will it take to reach Gaza?
In a post made around 12:30 p.m. Bangladesh time on his verified Facebook page, the Drik managing director answered those questions.
He wrote, “The best way to know where we are is to follow our tracker. The website of ‘Forensic Architecture’—with whom we earlier collaborated on a documentary about the murder of Abu Sayeed—is tracking both the Conscience and Thousand Madelines vessels in our flotilla.”
On the question of how long it might take to arrive, Shahidul explained that the answer depends on how the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) react. “Looking at past events, it seems likely that we may not be allowed to enter. We could be detained, sent back, or even imprisoned. It’s impossible to predict when or where that might happen—it’s out of our hands,” he added.
Calling for global solidarity, Shahidul urged people to act: “If you can create pressure that helps us reach Gaza, that would be the best outcome. The only way is for ordinary people to apply enough pressure on Israel. This is your chance—take action, stand together, and resist. This is a campaign for justice and human rights.”
He also mentioned receiving a message of encouragement earlier in the day from Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government.
Currently, Shahidul Alam is on the vessel “Conscience,” one of the ships in the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) and Thousand Madelines to Gaza (TMTG) fleets. These initiatives are part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a worldwide effort aimed at breaking the Israeli blockade of Gaza.
However, this particular convoy is not carrying humanitarian aid, but rather represents an international act of protest and solidarity.
