Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasir Uddin has announced that around 2.1 million deceased voters have been identified during the latest voter list update — many of whom had reportedly cast ballots in past elections.
Speaking at a dialogue with the media on Monday (October 6) at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, the CEC emphasized the commission’s commitment to conducting the 13th National Parliamentary Election in a fair, transparent, and neutral manner.
“This is not just rhetoric — we are determined to ensure a clean and credible election,” he said, adding that the media plays a vital role in preventing misinformation and maintaining transparency.
Nasir Uddin also mentioned plans to include Bangladeshi expatriate voters and government officials posted abroad in the voting process. “We want the election to be as clear as a mirror. About one million public servants will be able to vote this time,” he added.
Highlighting the need for cooperation, the CEC said, “Without the support of the media, it’s impossible to create a level playing field or a fair electoral atmosphere. Electronic media must also help curb the misuse of AI.”
Other election commissioners and senior EC officials attended the session, which was divided into two segments — one with television journalists in the morning and another with print and online reporters in the afternoon, involving around 50 media representatives in total.
The Election Commission will continue its series of dialogues on October 7, meeting with women leaders and election experts, followed by discussions with freedom fighters, political parties, and other stakeholders.
The series began on September 28 with a meeting involving civil society members, intellectuals, and academics — though more than half of the invitees were absent that day.
