Two private university students were killed early Friday in Dhaka’s Demra area when their motorcycle collided with a city corporation garbage truck. The two were returning home after attending a pre-wedding gaye holud ceremony.
The victims were identified as Tahsin Topu (25) and Iram Hriday (23), both students of separate private universities. Tahsin lived with his family in Sanarpara, Demra, while Iram resided in the Chittagong Road area.
According to Demra Police Station Sub-Inspector Md. Rubel Hawlader, the crash occurred on Mini Cox’s Bazar Road in Dharmicpara when a Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) waste truck and the motorcycle, coming from opposite directions, collided. The two riders were thrown onto the road and suffered severe injuries. They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where both later died. Police have seized the garbage truck, but the driver fled the scene.
Tausif Hossain, a friend of the victims who attended the gaye holud with them, said they had stopped to drink tea after the ceremony. Tahsin and Iram then went out for a short motorcycle ride. Moments later, their friends heard a loud crash. Rushing to the scene, they found the motorcycle crushed under the truck and the two students lying on the road. They were immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Inspector Md. Faruk, on duty at the hospital police camp, said doctors declared Tahsin dead around 4:45 a.m., while Iram succumbed to his injuries around 5:30 a.m. Their bodies have been kept in the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
