Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, stated that while the nation achieved independence in 1971, the essence of that freedom has been undermined. Speaking as the chief guest at a conference for Islami Chhatra Shibir members at Suhrawardy Udyan, Dhaka, on Tuesday, he accused the Awami League of hijacking the fruits of independence and handing them over to India. Highlighting a statement by India’s Prime Minister on December 16, he pointed out that the day was referred to as India’s victory day, which he claimed was evidence of the Awami League’s betrayal. Dr. Rahman also criticized the ruling party for dominating educational institutions, alleging moral corruption and atrocities against female students. He urged student organizations to restore the sanctity of education, vowing to resist violence and ensure institutions serve as centers of learning. Additionally, he called for justice for the killings under the Awami League regime, including the events of October 28, 2006, which he described as a massacre orchestrated by a “fascist leader.” The event was presided over by Islami Chhatra Shibir’s president, Manjurul Islam, and attended by senior leaders of Jamaat and Shibir.
