BNP urges swift national polls as Jamaat, Gono Odhikar push for local elections first

The BNP has reiterated its demand for swiftly holding national elections, countering calls from Jamaat-e-Islami and Gono Odhikar Parishad for prioritizing local government elections. Speaking at a public gathering in Cumilla’s Laksham and Monohorgonj, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized the need for a national election to establish a government backed by public support. He urged the interim government to expedite the process and called for political unity, dismissing proposals that he claimed could destabilize the country. Meanwhile, Jamaat and Gono Odhikar Parishad have maintained their stance that local elections should precede the national polls, further fueling the debate. BNP leaders, including Fakhrul and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, have rejected these proposals, stating that the interim government lacks the authority to organize local government elections. This division underscores growing tensions among political parties over the electoral roadmap as BNP positions itself as the leading force against the ruling Awami League while facing rivalry from Jamaat in the shifting political landscape.
