The July-24 Martyrs’ Family Society has issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding the resignation of Lt. Col. (Retd.) Kamal Akbar, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, and Treasurer Waqar Ahmed of the July Smriti Foundation. At a protest and human chain held in front of the foundation’s headquarters in Dhaka on Monday morning (May 12), they threatened to lock down the office if the resignations are not submitted within the timeframe. Protesters argued that the CEO has no familial connection to those martyred or injured in the July movement, rendering him ineligible for the role. They also alleged that during a recent meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna, the treasurer made derogatory remarks about martyr Yamin’s father and the injured survivors. Furthermore, they criticized the leadership for failing to hold any of the eight scheduled general meetings in the past eight months and condemned the lack of consultation with members on key decisions. The demonstrators warned of escalating their movement if immediate steps are not taken.
