Condition of Chittagong University Student Injured in Clash Shows Slight Improvement

The health condition of Imtiaz Ahmed, a Chittagong University student seriously injured during a clash between students and local residents, has shown some improvement, though he has not yet fully regained consciousness. Six days after the incident, his life support was temporarily switched off for testing around 1:00 pm on Saturday. Doctors said he will remain under 24-hour observation.

Imtiaz, a student of the International Relations Department, was severely injured last Sunday during the confrontation at the university. Since then, he has been on life support at the ICU of Parkview Hospital in the city. Over the past two days, his consciousness level has hovered around 6–7 on the standard scale.

Although Imtiaz is from Comilla, his family resides in Bogura. After learning of his injury, his parents, Amir Hossain and Shahnaz Amin, traveled from Bogura to Chittagong on Monday morning. They have been waiting outside the ICU, hoping for his recovery.

Speaking to Prothom Alo around 3:30 pm, Imtiaz’s brother, Asaduzzaman Shoaib, said, “Imtiaz has not fully regained consciousness but is showing some responses. His life support was temporarily turned off for testing. A second medical board convened in the morning, and a new CT scan showed no bleeding in his brain. Doctors report his consciousness level is now around 8–9.”

A second medical board was held at 11:00 am, attended by neurosurgeons Kamal Uddin, Md. Ismail, Monjurul Islam, and neuromedicine specialist Hasanuzzaman. The board recommended temporarily turning off life support for evaluation. Two additional medicine specialists were also called to the hospital for further observation.

Parkview Hospital’s Deputy General Manager, Mohammad Humayun Kabir, said, “Imtiaz’s condition is better than before. He is moving his limbs and can recognize his family members. After life support was switched off temporarily, he is being closely monitored.”

The incident occurred between 12:15 am and noon on August 30–31 near Gate 2 of the university. The clashes erupted following an allegation of a female student being assaulted, leading to several rounds of confrontations and chases between students and local residents. At least 200 students, as well as the university’s Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Md. Kamal Uddin and Proctor Professor Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif, were injured. Reports indicate that 10–12 local residents were also hurt during the incidents.
