Towhid Hridoy has scripted a remarkable chapter in Bangladesh cricket history, converting his maiden Test century into a double century during the second Test against the West Indies in Sylhet.
The right-handed batter reached the 200-run milestone off 304 balls with a single off Jomel Warrican, pushing the ball towards mid-on. He became the first Bangladeshi batter to turn his maiden Test hundred into a double century.
Hridoy is also the fourth Bangladeshi cricketer to score a double century in Test cricket, following Mushfiqur Rahim, who has achieved the feat three times, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal.
At the end of 101 overs, Bangladesh were 340 for eight, with Hridoy unbeaten on 208 off 314 deliveries, including eight sixes and 19 fours. Taskin Ahmed was at the other end on two from nine balls. Bangladesh were looking to build a lead through their partnership.
Bangladesh had faced a difficult situation from the beginning of the second Test against the West Indies. After losing two wickets for just 22 runs, Hridoy took responsibility for rebuilding the innings.
Despite wickets falling at regular intervals, he held one end firmly, constructed important partnerships with his teammates and resisted sustained pressure from the West Indies bowlers.
Hridoy resumed batting on the third morning alongside Mushfiqur Rahim. However, Jomel Warrican struck twice in the first session, dismissing both Mushfiqur and Litton Das to put Bangladesh under further pressure. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud also failed to stay at the crease for long.
Yet Hridoy continued to score runs, balancing cautious defence with attacking strokes.
He reached his maiden Test half-century off 109 balls before completing his first century in 171 deliveries. He then continued his innings against bowlers including Shamar Joseph and Roston Chase, striking two sixes off Chase in a single over.
Taijul Islam provided valuable support at the other end. The pair added 117 runs for the eighth wicket, one of Bangladesh’s notable partnerships for that position in Test cricket. Their stand ended when Taijul was stumped for 22.
Hridoy continued to carry the innings with the lower-order batters even after Taijul’s dismissal. At one stage, he was struck on the ribs by the ball but continued batting.
After crossing 150, Hridoy set a new record for the highest individual Test innings at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. He also surpassed the previous highest score by a Bangladeshi batter against the West Indies in Test cricket.
After reaching his double century, Hridoy struck another six off Bishop in the following over, moving past Tamim Iqbal’s previous record for the most sixes by a Bangladeshi batter in a single Test innings. Hridoy now holds the record with eight sixes, while Tamim had hit seven against Pakistan in 2015.
Before Hridoy’s innings, the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi batter in Test cricket was Mushfiqur Rahim’s 219.
