Around 500 Bhori of Gold Reported Stolen from a Jewelry Shop in Malibagh
A jewelry store inside a shopping complex in the capital’s Malibagh area has reportedly been looted, with nearly 500 bhori of gold ornaments missing.
According to the shop owner, the theft took place late on Wednesday night. Of the stolen gold, about 400 bhori belonged to the shop, while another 100 bhori were items kept as collateral by customers.
At current market prices, each bhori of gold costs over two lakh taka, meaning the total loss is worth many crores.
Police visited the scene on Thursday morning after receiving the complaint but have not yet made any arrests. Officers said there is some uncertainty over the exact quantity of gold stolen.
Golam Faruq, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramna Police Station, told the media that the incident occurred at Shampa Jewellers, located on the second floor of Fortune Shopping Mall in Malibagh.
Security footage reportedly shows that around 3:10 a.m., the grill of a third-floor window at the back of the mall had been broken.
“The thieves are believed to have entered through that opening, gone down to the second floor, broken the shutter of the jewelry shop, and taken the gold from the display cases,” said OC Faruq.
He added that police are reviewing all CCTV footage from the mall in an attempt to identify the perpetrators.
Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Division Police, said that security guards were on duty at the mall’s main entrance, and the shops were locked up for the night when the theft occurred. “The burglars likely entered from the rear side after breaking the window grill,” he said.
Police are now working to trace the suspects and recover the stolen jewelry, though discrepancies remain about the total amount of gold lost.
The incident has caused panic among shop owners and traders across the shopping complex.
