Eminent Professor and Writer Syed Manzoorul Islam Passes Away

Syed Manzoorul Islam, Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Dhaka and a distinguished fiction writer and essayist, has passed away. (Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un).

He breathed his last at 5:00 pm on Friday while undergoing treatment at LabAid Hospital in Dhaka.

The news of his passing was confirmed to the media by Mazharul Islam, Chief Executive of Adhuna Prakash, who had been in close contact with the hospital authorities regarding the professor’s treatment.

Sudden Illness and Hospitalization

On Friday, October 3, Professor Islam suddenly fell ill while on his way to the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) in Dhanmondi. His driver, with the help of a passerby, rushed him to a nearby hospital.

Upon hearing of his condition, Mazharul Islam and others arrived and later transferred him to LabAid Hospital.

Doctors there confirmed that he had suffered a massive heart attack, and a stent procedure was performed to support his heart.

Health Deterioration and Final Hours

Despite initial improvement, his health began to decline again last Saturday.

His oxygen levels dropped, and fluid began to accumulate in his lungs, forcing doctors to place him on life support Sunday evening. After nearly 48 hours on life support, his condition slightly improved before deteriorating once more.

Doctors eventually withdrew life support and pronounced him dead around 5:00 pm Friday.

Funeral and Final Rites

According to his family and close friends, Professor Islam’s body has been placed in the mortuary at BIRDEM Hospital.

Tomorrow (Saturday), his remains will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar at 11:00 am for the public to pay their last respects.

His funeral prayer (janaza) will be held after Jumu’ah prayers at the Dhaka University Central Mosque, followed by burial at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard, family sources said.
