As the July Charter signing ceremony took place, a group of demonstrators gathered in Dhaka’s Farmgate area this afternoon, urging the authorities to enforce the July Protection Act and provide rehabilitation for those injured during the July movement.

Around 4:00pm, more than a dozen protesters assembled near the Khamarbari intersection in Farmgate, chanting slogans and holding placards, according to on-site reports.

At the gathering, Banasree Bidyaniketan School teacher Mosad Uddin said that proceeding with the July Charter without first implementing the Protection Act would be “a betrayal” of those who participated in the uprising.

We want our demands met, and we have already submitted them to several ministries,” he told journalists.

Earlier in the day, police reportedly used batons to disperse demonstrators near the parliament building.

One of the protesters, Soheli Tamanna, a student of Mirpur Law College, said she sustained injuries during the incident.

When I was near the south gate of the parliament this morning, police suddenly struck me with a baton. My hand is fractured. We were protesting peacefully,” she said.

I was injured during the mass movement, and now it has happened again. The July Charter shouldn’t be signed without ensuring proper rehabilitation, financial aid, and medical support for those hurt in the uprising,” Soheli added.

Another protester, Aminul Islam Imon, claimed, “Those who were injured during the movement are being neglected. This government came into being because of our struggle, yet we are now being ignored.”

The protest was still ongoing when this report was filed around 4:45pm.
