BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that experience shows a person becomes authoritarian if they remain in power too long. For that reason, he said, there is agreement that no one should serve as prime minister for more than two terms. He added that proposals have been made to balance the authority of the president and the prime minister and to ensure full independence of the judiciary. According to him, these reforms aim to bring a genuine “quality of change” to national politics, even though such transitions naturally face obstacles.
Speaking on Tuesday afternoon at a discussion with lawyers at the Thakurgaon District Lawyers Association hall, Fakhrul described the country as being in a transitional phase—moving from an authoritarian system toward a democratic order. Following the mass uprising, the interim government has already taken some steps, including forming six commissions to work on constitutional and structural reforms. The most significant among them, he noted, is the Constitutional Reform Commission, which for the first time has proposed a bicameral parliament with an upper and lower house. Although this is unfamiliar in Bangladesh, he said the party agreed to it, believing such a system would establish stronger checks and balances.
Fakhrul also mentioned the emergence of a youth-led group called the NCP, saying that young voices should be encouraged because the next generation must eventually take responsibility for the country. Reflecting on Bangladesh’s historical turning points—from the 1971 Liberation War to recent political shifts—he argued that today’s political and social landscape requires accepting and understanding new ideas from younger citizens. Older generations, he said, often dismiss youth perspectives, but cooperation between generations is essential to avoid conflict and achieve progress.
He added that every person has a productive period in life and that abilities naturally decline with age. One should remain active while capable but step aside when the time comes. For this reason, he said he has decided that the current election will be the last of his career.
Addressing criticism of him, Fakhrul noted that much of it appears on social media, where some accuse him of being too conciliatory. He questioned how long the cycle of confrontation, violence, and unrest should continue, saying the country needs a path toward peace and stability.
Leaders of the Thakurgaon District BNP and members of the local lawyers’ association were present at the event.
