Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, an adviser in the interim government, has confirmed that he intends to contest the national election. He said it is too early to disclose details about his candidacy, including which party he may represent or which constituency he will run from.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Secretariat this afternoon, Asif said that any announcement regarding his resignation would be made by the Chief Adviser’s Office at the appropriate time.

Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina administration on August 5 last year, the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus was formed on August 8. Three student leaders who were involved in the July uprising joined the advisory council. Among them, Nahid Islam was assigned the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, while Asif Mahmud was initially given the Youth and Sports Ministry. After a later reshuffle, Asif took on additional responsibilities, including the Labour Ministry and later the Local Government Ministry.

Earlier this year, student leaders of the July uprising launched a new political platform, the National Citizens’ Party (NCP). Nahid Islam resigned from the advisory council to lead the party, after which Mahfuz Alam took charge of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry.

Asif previously indicated that he planned to run from Dhaka. On November 9, he applied to transfer his voter registration to Dhanmondi, prompting speculation that he might contest the Dhaka-10 seat. There were also rumours linking him with the BNP or suggesting that he might seek their nomination, though the BNP has already named a candidate for that constituency.

In today’s briefing, Asif reiterated, “I will run in the election—that much is clear. But the constituency and party affiliation will be decided later.”

Regarding his possible resignation, the adviser said he is not authorised to comment and that the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing will inform the public when a decision is made. He added that no final decision has yet been taken on the matter.

Asif also mentioned that he has submitted his asset declaration and cancelled his diplomatic passport.
