Rescue efforts are still underway in Tanore, Rajshahi, to save a young child who fell into a 30–35 foot-deep shaft. Fire service teams worked through the night on Wednesday, but after nearly 16 hours of continuous attempts, the child had not been located. As of 9:00am today, Thursday, the operation was still in progress.
According to fire service officials, rescuers are digging from the side of the main pit in hopes of reaching the child. Even after descending about 35 feet, they have not yet found him. Tanore Police Station’s officer-in-charge, Shahinuzzaman, told reporters this morning that the operation is ongoing and excavation continues.
The incident occurred around 1:00pm on Wednesday in Koel Hat Purbo Para village, when two-year-old Sajid fell into the hole. He is the son of Md Rakib from the same village.
Local residents said that the groundwater level in Pachandar Union has dropped significantly, and installing new deep wells in the area is currently restricted. Despite this, a man named Kachir Uddin had dug the shaft on his land to check whether water could be found. Although he had filled the hole earlier, rain caused the soil to sink, reopening it — and it was into this cavity that the child slipped.
Excavation began around 5:30pm yesterday using an excavator. Fire service units from Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj, along with police and army personnel, joined the effort. By 10:00pm, the smaller excavator was no longer sufficient, so a larger one was brought in from Rajshahi City Corporation. Work continued overnight. By around 8:00am today, rescuers had reached a depth of roughly 35 feet beside the original shaft but still had no trace of the child. Authorities believe the child may have slipped even deeper.
Fire service officials said they received the initial alert around 2:30pm on Wednesday and began the rescue soon afterward. Some soil had already collapsed into the shaft due to earlier attempts by locals, making the operation more difficult. Once the team arrived, they immediately started supplying oxygen through a pipe down the hole.
