A man has been detained by law enforcement after investigators traced the registration number of the motorcycle used in the attack on Sharif Osman bin Hadi, a potential independent candidate in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election and the convener of Inkilab Mancha. The detained individual is the registered owner of the motorcycle, identified as Abdul Hannan. He was arrested on Saturday from the Mohammadpur area of the capital.
On Sunday, Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the information while speaking to journalists. Earlier in the day, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) stated that it had identified the motorcycle used in the attack and handed over its owner, Abdul Hannan, to the police after detaining him.
Meanwhile, Osman Hadi’s physical condition remains unchanged. According to Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inkilab Mancha, doctors may consider transferring him abroad for advanced treatment if his condition improves. He is currently receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where Al Jaber is staying by his side.
Speaking at the DMP Media Centre, DC Talebur Rahman said police are examining whether Abdul Hannan was directly involved in the attempted murder. He added that law enforcement agencies are making maximum efforts to arrest those responsible for the shooting and that the shooter has already been identified.
In response to a question, Rahman said there is no confirmed information yet indicating that the perpetrators have fled the country. The motive behind the attack will be revealed through investigation, he added.
The DMP official also noted that special attention is being given to the security of candidates participating in the election. To maintain law and order in the city, police have increased checkpoint operations and patrols.
Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner Harun Or Rashid told the media that RAB-2 initially detained Abdul Hannan on suspicion of involvement in the attack and later handed him over to the police.
Police sources said the motorcycle from which Osman Hadi was shot has been identified, and following the arrest of its owner, both the suspect and the vehicle were handed over to Paltan Police Station.
RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Director, Wing Commander MZM Intekhab Chowdhury, said Abdul Hannan was arrested from Mohammadpur and the motorcycle used in the attack was seized from his possession. Both were subsequently transferred to Paltan police. RAB is now conducting operations to arrest Faisal Karim Masud, who is suspected to be the shooter.
The attack occurred at around 2:24 pm on Friday in the Box Culvert area of Old Paltan, Dhaka. According to investigators, a gunman riding a motorcycle followed Osman Hadi from behind and opened fire while Hadi was traveling in a battery-powered rickshaw.
Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Paltan Police Station, RAB, DB, and other specialized units, are jointly investigating the case and conducting operations to identify and arrest all those involved.
