Due to the Eid holidays, the country will experience a continuous nine-day closure, during which banks and financial institutions will remain closed. However, this does not mean financial transactions will come to a halt. Alternative banking services will remain operational, ensuring that transactions continue seamlessly. During long holidays, the need for cash increases, and ATM booths and mobile financial services (MFS) cash-out options will serve as key solutions.
Customers can withdraw money using debit or credit cards from ATMs or make transactions through point-of-sale (POS) terminals. Online banking services will remain functional, along with mobile financial services like bKash, Rocket, and Nagad. This ensures uninterrupted financial transactions despite bank closures.
Most private banks now mandate ATM card issuance when opening accounts, ensuring that new customers have access to cash withdrawal services. Besides ATMs, cash recycling machines (CRMs) allow both deposits and withdrawals. Many banks are now replacing ATMs with CRMs for enhanced services. Additionally, POS terminals provide a convenient way to make purchases and payments using cards.
Currently, there are 12,946 ATMs and 7,012 CRMs across the country, along with 125,569 POS terminals. Banks have issued 49.4 million debit cards and 7.5 million prepaid cards, though many customers hold multiple cards. As more people shift to digital banking, cash transactions remain accessible even during the Eid holidays.
Moreover, banking apps and internet banking services allow instant fund transfers between accounts. With 11.5 million internet banking users, digital transactions have become more common. In January alone, over Tk 1 trillion was transacted through internet banking. Popular banking apps such as Islami Bank’s CellFin, Dutch-Bangla Bank’s NexusPay, BRAC Bank’s Aastha, and City Bank’s CityTouch facilitate seamless transactions.
Mobile financial services (MFS) like bKash, Nagad, and Rocket remain widely used and will remain operational throughout the holidays. Customers can deposit money from banks into their MFS accounts and withdraw cash from agents, ensuring continuous access to funds.
To maintain service availability, Bangladesh Bank has instructed commercial banks to keep ATMs sufficiently stocked with cash and ensure the smooth operation of POS terminals, e-payment gateways, and mobile financial services. This ensures uninterrupted transactions, providing customers with convenient alternatives during the long holiday period.
