Protesters demanding a ban on the Awami League have moved from Dhaka’s Shahbagh intersection to the Royal Intersection in front of Hotel Intercontinental. Joining the demonstration were activists and supporters from several groups, including Islami Chhatra Shibir, United Peoples Bangladesh (UP Bangladesh), Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), Inqilab Mancha, Islami Chhatra Andolan, and others. The relocation occurred around 9 PM on Saturday night.
Earlier, from a large gathering at Shahbagh, NCP’s Southern Region chief organizer Hasnat Abdullah announced a movement called “March to Jamuna” after failing to receive a clear roadmap from the government on banning the Awami League within the set timeframe.
He stated that since the government failed to make any announcement within the previously given deadline, they would now occupy the Royal Intersection in front of Hotel Intercontinental.
Following Hasnat’s declaration, the gathered demonstrators began moving toward Hotel Intercontinental from Shahbagh.
Previously, around 7:30 PM, Hasnat had issued a one-hour ultimatum, demanding a specific roadmap regarding the proposed ban. He had warned that if the government failed to respond within the hour, they would launch a march toward Jamuna—the official residence of the interim government’s chief advisor.
This marks the second consecutive day of sit-in demonstrations at Shahbagh demanding the Awami League be banned. Leaders and activists from various political parties joined in solidarity. Due to the blockade, all surrounding roads remained closed to regular traffic, although emergency services, including ambulances, were allowed to pass.
