BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep concern over the recent fire at the Secretariat, emphasizing the need to identify and punish those responsible promptly. In a statement to the media on Thursday, December 26, he highlighted the alarming nature of a fire in such a sensitive location, which resulted in one death and left several others injured. Fakhrul also lamented the extensive damage caused by the destruction of important documents and questioned the interim government’s ability to handle such incidents effectively.

He further underscored the unusual circumstances of a fire breaking out in a highly secure area like the Secretariat late at night and called for a thorough investigation to bring the culprits to justice. Fakhrul urged authorities to compensate the victims’ families and provide support to the injured.

The fire reportedly began in Building 7 of the Secretariat around 1:54 AM on December 25, with the Secretariat’s fire service unit attempting initial control. As the blaze intensified, 19 additional units worked for nearly six hours, finally containing the fire by 8:05 AM, though it took 10 hours to fully extinguish. Two investigation committees have since been formed to probe the incident.
