Retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the Home Affairs Advisor, stated that police officers accused of involvement in the killings during the July-August uprising would be apprehended gradually. Speaking at 11 a.m. on Wednesday after inspecting the Ansar and Village Defense Force headquarters in Khilgaon, Dhaka, he confirmed that several arrests had already been made and more were occurring daily.

The advisor noted that police officers accused of firing on student protesters during the uprising were being transferred and reassigned within the force. When asked why they had not been arrested, he explained that it was not feasible to apprehend everyone in a single day, but assured that video footage would be used to identify and bring all perpetrators to justice.

Additionally, he announced the discontinuation of mandatory leave for Ansar members, addressing a longstanding demand within the force. He emphasized that Ansar, with its vast membership of approximately 6.1 million, plays a critical role during emergencies and major events. Discussions are underway to enhance their training and include all members in a comprehensive database.

The visit aimed to understand the challenges faced by the Ansar and Village Defense Force and explore ways to further strengthen the organization. The advisor also praised Ansar’s significant contributions, particularly during natural disasters and religious festivities, such as their commendable role during Puja celebrations.
