Legal Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul has emphasized that no matter what other advisers say about the election, the decision of the Chief Adviser is final. Speaking to reporters outside the State Guest House Jamuna on Wednesday (April 16), following a meeting between BNP leaders and Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, he said it would be ideal if the election could be held by December. However, he clarified that even if that doesn’t happen, the election will not be delayed beyond June. “The election must be held as early as possible between December and June—there is no room for delay,” he stressed.

When asked whether the trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India, was being delayed, Dr. Nazrul responded that the investigation into her serious crimes is ongoing and the prosecution is receiving full support from the government.

Regarding BNP’s position, Dr. Nazrul mentioned that the party wants the election to take place within December and is showing a positive attitude toward the Consensus Commission’s proposals. He said BNP plans to sit with the commission within a few days and agrees with most of the proposed reforms. A new charter, referred to as the “July Charter,” is expected to be finalized soon.

He added that the interim government plans to announce an election roadmap two months prior to the national vote.
