Bangladesh is currently facing a shortage of 8,000 doctors, according to Noorjahan Begum, Advisor to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. To address this crisis, she announced that 2,000 doctors will soon be recruited through a special BCS examination. She made these remarks on Monday, April 21, during a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between the Ministry of Railways and the Health Services Division, aimed at jointly managing ten hospitals under Bangladesh Railway. The event, held at the Health Ministry’s conference room, was attended by Muhammad Faozul Kabir Khan, Advisor to the Ministry of Railways, along with Health Secretary Md. Saidur Rahman and Railway Secretary Fahimul Islam, who signed the MoU. Under this agreement, ten railway hospitals will be co-managed by both ministries and opened to the general public in addition to railway staff. Noorjahan Begum expressed optimism that the special BCS recruitment process would allow the hiring of 2,000 doctors by mid-September this year. She also noted that if the Health Services Division fails to provide sufficient staff for the hospitals, the Ministry of Railways may take steps to recruit through the Public Service Commission. Earlier, on March 13, Health Ministry’s Assistant Professor Sayedur Rahman stated that a proposal was made to increase the BCS age limit for doctors from 32 to 34 years to help expand the medical workforce.
