Crowds Gather for Khaleda Zia’s Funeral

The funeral prayer of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will be held at the western plaza of the National Parliament complex and along Manik Mia Avenue. The janaza is scheduled to take place at 2:00 pm today, Wednesday. Since early morning, BNP leaders, activists, and ordinary citizens have been arriving in groups at Manik Mia Avenue to attend the prayer.

On-the-ground observations around 10:30 am showed large crowds gathered at the southern plaza of the Parliament complex, the main road of Manik Mia Avenue, and nearby intersections including the Khamarbari area of Farmgate. People were waiting eagerly for the arrival of Khaleda Zia’s body. Many party supporters have also travelled from outside Dhaka to be part of the janaza.

More than a hundred BNP activists came from Kashimpur Union of Muktagacha upazila in Mymensingh to attend the funeral. They began their journey at around 3:30 am and reached Manik Mia Avenue by 7:00 am, where they have been waiting since. Mozammel Haque, a member of the convening committee of the Muktagacha Upazila Krishak Dal, said they had come to pay their final respects to their leader, whom he described as a symbol of democracy.

Student wing leader Dudaev Masud travelled from Satkhira for the janaza. He said their leader is no more, and they came to honor her for the last time, urging everyone to pray for her soul.

Earlier, around 10:00 am, BNP activist Azizul Haque from the Banshal area of the capital was seen travelling by metro rail to Manik Mia Avenue with several others. He said they were going to bid farewell to their beloved leader.
