Shama Obaid has given up her U.S. citizenship

BNP candidate for the Faridpur-2 constituency (Saltha and Nagarkanda) and the party’s central organizing secretary, Shama Obaid, previously held U.S. citizenship. However, she formally renounced that citizenship on November 20, before the election schedule for the 13th National Parliamentary Election was announced. This information was disclosed in the affidavit she submitted to the Election Commission along with her nomination papers on December 28.
In her affidavit, Shama Obaid identified herself as a businessperson. She stated that she is the Managing Director of Allure Builders Limited, the Chairperson of Avosilk Solutions, and the General Secretary of the Institute for Global Cooperation Foundation (IGCF).
She reported an annual income of Tk 2,189,071. This includes Tk 1.26 million from apartment rentals, Tk 46,404 from profits on shares, savings certificates, and bank deposits, Tk 786,667 from employment income, and Tk 96,000 as honoraria.
According to the affidavit, the acquisition value of her movable assets is Tk 36,285,806, while the current estimated value stands at Tk 43,785,806. These assets include Tk 25,251,894 in cash, Tk 3,033,912 deposited in banks and financial institutions, Tk 5 million invested in shares, bonds, and securities, and a jeep valued at Tk 3 million. She also declared possession of 50 tolas of gold but did not specify its monetary value.
Regarding immovable assets, Shama Obaid reported an acquisition value of Tk 69,320,000, with a current estimated value of Tk 90 million. She did not assign any value to 450 decimals of inherited land. Her declared immovable properties include 450 decimals of inherited non-agricultural land and a 3,245-square-foot apartment in Banani, Dhaka, valued at Tk 69,320,000.
Affidavit comparison
An analysis of her affidavits shows that in 2018, Shama Obaid reported a total annual income of Tk 3,006,825. In the current affidavit, her income is listed as Tk 2,189,071, indicating a decrease of Tk 817,754 over the past seven years.
In 2018, her movable assets were valued at Tk 15,382,287. In the latest affidavit, the value of movable assets increased to Tk 36,285,806—an increase of Tk 20,903,519 over seven years.
Her current immovable assets are valued at Tk 69,320,000, compared to Tk 70,320,000 reported in 2018, reflecting a reduction of Tk 1 million. In 2018, she declared 1.5 acres of inherited agricultural land, the value of which she said was unknown. In the current affidavit, no agricultural land is listed; instead, she reported 450 decimals of inherited non-agricultural land, which was not mentioned in the earlier affidavit, though its value was not specified.
In 2018, she also declared three inherited apartments with a combined area of 6,610 square feet, valued at Tk 70,320,000.
Additionally, the 2018 affidavit stated that she had loans totaling Tk 30.5 million from Southeast Bank Limited in two phases as a director of Allure Builders Limited. In the 2025 affidavit, no personal loans were declared. She also reported owning 60 tolas of gold received as wedding gifts in 2018, whereas the current affidavit lists 50 tolas of gold.
