The High Court is set to deliver its verdict today, May 28, on the appeal filed by Dr. Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, challenging her three-year prison sentence in a corruption case. The judgment will be pronounced by the bench of Justice Md Khizir Hayat.
Earlier, on May 26, the same bench scheduled the verdict date after concluding the hearing. Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Asif Hasan represented the state, while Dr. Zubaida Rahman was represented by lawyers SM Shahjahan, Kaiser Kamal, and Zakir Hossain Bhuiyan.
In August 2023, a Dhaka court had sentenced Tarique Rahman to nine years and Dr. Zubaida Rahman to three years in prison over illegal wealth accumulation. However, on August 5, 2024, the government temporarily suspended her sentence for one year under appeal conditions.
Dr. Zubaida returned to Bangladesh on May 6 this year with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia after 17 years abroad. On May 14, Justice Md Khizir Hayat granted her bail and accepted her appeal against the sentence. Earlier, on May 13, the High Court had allowed the appeal and condoned a delay of 587 days in filing it.
