Bangladesh’s interim government head, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has been named among the top 10 personalities of the year by the renowned science journal Nature. Ranked 7th on the list, Dr. Yunus has been recognized as a “Nation Builder” by the publication.

This recognition, detailed in a report published on Monday on Nature’s website, honors individuals who significantly contributed to scientific advancement in 2024.

At the top of the list is Dr. Eckhard Peik, who earned the title “Father Time” for his groundbreaking work in quantum optics and atomic physics. His research with laser-cooled atoms and ions has cemented his place as one of the field’s leading figures.

Regarding Dr. Yunus, Nature highlighted his six decades of work dedicated to innovative solutions for poverty alleviation. His approach—anchored in evidence-based decision-making and pragmatic problem-solving—has defined his career.

After the fall of a repressive government in Bangladesh on August 5, Dr. Yunus was invited by student leaders of the movement to take charge as the head of the interim government. Despite facing numerous challenges, he has since been steering the country towards progress.

Dr. Yunus previously played a pivotal role in rebuilding Bangladesh after the Liberation War of 1971. In 1983, he founded the Grameen Bank and initiated a global movement for poverty eradication, which ultimately earned him the Nobel Peace Prize.
