Chief Advisor Pledges Strong Support for Gambia in Rohingya Case

Gambia, the Muslim-majority African nation, filed a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2019, labeling the Myanmar military’s atrocities against the Rohingya as genocide. On Wednesday, March 12, during a meeting at the state guesthouse Jamuna, Gambia’s Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara met with Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who pledged to stand by Gambia in ensuring the case’s success.
Tangara affirmed his country’s commitment to seeking justice for the persecuted Rohingya, stating that the Gambian president fully supports the case. In response, Dr. Yunus thanked Gambia for its unwavering efforts and emphasized the importance of achieving a favorable outcome, saying, “We want success in this case and seek your support, which would be a great help to us.”
Praising Dr. Yunus’ leadership, Tangara expressed confidence that his diplomatic initiatives would contribute to restoring dignity to the Rohingya people. The two leaders also discussed signing an agreement to collaborate in UN peacekeeping operations. Additionally, they explored the potential of microfinance in alleviating poverty across Africa and fostering stability in conflict-ridden regions.
Dr. Khalilur Rahman, High Representative for the Chief Advisor on Rohingya affairs, and Lamia Morshed, Senior Secretary for Bangladesh’s SDG affairs, were also present at the meeting.
