Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has sent a letter to President Donald Trump, urging for easier access and tariff relief for Bangladeshi goods in the U.S. market. The news was confirmed on Monday, April 7, by Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

In the letter, Dr. Yunus assured President Trump of Bangladesh’s commitment to supporting his trade agenda and highlighted the country’s proactive steps to expand American exports in its rapidly growing 170-million-strong market. He mentioned that Bangladesh had already dispatched a senior envoy to Washington, D.C. to work toward this goal—becoming the first country to do so after the U.S. made relevant announcements.

The letter also noted that Bangladesh had been the first to sign a long-term agreement for LNG imports from the U.S. following the lifting of export restrictions. Since then, Bangladeshi officials have been working to identify concrete plans to increase U.S. exports, with trade advisers collaborating with U.S. counterparts to strengthen bilateral engagement.

Dr. Yunus emphasized that Bangladesh intends to significantly boost imports of key American agricultural products such as cotton, wheat, corn, and soybeans—supporting U.S. farmers in the process. He stated that the country is finalizing bonded warehousing facilities to promote U.S. cotton imports with duty-free access.

The letter further expressed Bangladesh’s willingness to eliminate tariffs on selected American goods, including agricultural items and scrap metal, and reduce tariffs by 50% on major U.S. exports like gas turbines, semiconductors, and medical equipment.

Highlighting technological cooperation, Dr. Yunus stated that necessary steps have already been taken to introduce Starlink internet services in Bangladesh, which he believes will open new opportunities in civil aviation and defense sectors for U.S. businesses.

He concluded by expressing hope that all planned actions would be completed within the next three months and requested a temporary suspension of reciprocal tariffs on Bangladeshi exports during that period, appealing to President Trump for his support.
