Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has stressed that sending the Rohingya community back to their homeland remains the only practical way to resolve the prolonged crisis.
“The only real solution is the safe return of the Rohingya people to their own land—there is no alternative,” Yunus said during a meeting in New York yesterday with Julie Bishop, the UN Special Envoy on Myanmar and former acting prime minister of Australia.
Their discussions covered a range of topics, including the situation in Rakhine State, the ongoing humanitarian challenges facing the Rohingya refugees, the funding shortfalls that have sharply reduced aid, and expectations for the upcoming international conference on Myanmar scheduled for Tuesday.
Yunus expressed hope that the conference would deliver concrete outcomes: “We cannot allow the world to overlook this issue. Let’s hope tomorrow’s gathering produces meaningful proposals.”
Julie Bishop underlined the urgency of broadening financial support for the Rohingya response, urging member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to step up contributions.
The meeting was also attended by Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain, NCP leader Tasnim Jara, and SDG Coordinator Lamiya Morshed.
