Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has expelled eight students for life and suspended 12 others for varying terms due to their involvement in attempting to reintroduce student politics on campus, which has been officially banned. Additionally, 40 students received warnings or other disciplinary actions. According to BUET’s Director of Student Welfare, Professor AKM Masud, the decision followed an investigation into activities led by Chhatra League members in March of the previous year, when they attempted to revive political activities on campus. The investigation found that the students violated university regulations. While no names were officially released, students had previously demanded the expulsion of central Chhatra League executive member Imtiaz Rabbi, along with ASM Anas Ferdous, Hasin Arman Nihal, Aniruddha Majumder, Zahidul Islam, and Sayem Mahmud, for organizing political gatherings. The protests intensified when the High Court temporarily suspended BUET’s ban on student politics, prompting further demonstrations. BUET’s administration formed an inquiry committee that held 41 meetings, along with seven sessions of the disciplinary board, before finalizing these decisions. The punishments take effect immediately.
