On the occasion of the holy day of Ashura, Shia Muslims in Dhaka took out traditional Tazia processions across various parts of the city. These symbolic marches depicted the tragic scenes of Karbala, highlighting the cruelty of Yazid’s forces and the oppression faced by the followers of Islam. With chants of mourning and protest, participants recalled the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his unwavering stand against injustice.
On Sunday morning (July 6), a large procession began from the Shia Mosque in Mohammadpur and concluded at Farmgate. The procession drew people of all ages—children, youth, men, and women—who dressed in black to express their grief and solidarity. Cries of “Hay Hussain” echoed through the streets, while many participants beat their chests in remembrance of the Imam’s sacrifice.
Similar scenes were observed in other parts of the capital later in the day, as more processions were held. Shia mourners believe that Imam Hussain’s martyrdom is a powerful symbol of standing for truth and justice, even in the face of tyranny. On Ashura, they call upon all Muslims to rise above divisions and unite in the spirit of brotherhood and sacrifice.
