Air pollution is increasing in many cities around the world due to climate change and other factors, and Dhaka, one of the world’s largest megacities, has long been affected. While heavy rainfall in recent days has slightly improved the city’s air quality, it still remains unhealthy, particularly for sensitive groups, according to air quality monitoring platform IQAir.
On Friday, July 11, around 9:30 AM, IQAir reported that Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, topped the global pollution list with an AQI score of 175. Dhaka ranked ninth with a score of 105, categorized as “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”
At the same time, Kampala in Uganda ranked second with a score of 167, followed by Dubai with a score of 164. According to AQI standards, a score between 0–50 is considered good, 51–100 moderate, and 101–150 unhealthy for sensitive individuals. Scores between 151–200 are labeled “unhealthy,” while 201–300 indicates “very unhealthy,” prompting health advisories for all age groups. Scores above 300 are deemed “hazardous,” posing serious health risks to urban populations.
