Bus blockade in Mohakhali causes severe traffic congestion

Transport workers staged a blockade in Dhaka’s Mohakhali by parking buses across the road, bringing traffic to a standstill in the area and nearby streets.

The demonstration began around 1:30 pm on Sunday (7 September) when buses were positioned sideways on both lanes, effectively cutting off movement. Police from Banani station and Gulshan Traffic Division said they were holding talks to resolve the standoff.

According to Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Russel Sarwar, the incident stemmed from a dispute between students of Titumir College, who assist traffic police, and staff of Ekota Paribahan. Following the scuffle, several buses of the company were held up by students. In response, drivers and workers blocked the road from both sides.

Witnesses said buses were placed across the road from Mohakhali Rail Gate up to Nabisco, causing gridlock that spread to Banani and Tejgaon. The police confirmed discussions were ongoing with transport leaders and students to ease the situation.

Gulshan Traffic Division posted on Facebook that both lanes in the Mohakhali terminal area were blocked by transport workers and owners, while law enforcers were deployed on site.

The sudden road closure triggered heavy tailbacks stretching from Banani to Tejgaon. In the scorching heat, commuters suffered long delays, with many forced to leave buses and seek alternative routes to reach their destinations.
