Bangladesh has gained recognition for three more green garment factories, bringing the total number of eco-friendly factories in the country to 240. With these additions, Bangladesh now holds 66 out of the world’s top 100 environmentally friendly garment factories.

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) recently awarded this recognition, as confirmed by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). According to BGMEA, 240 textile and apparel factories in Bangladesh have received LEED certification so far, including 98 with LEED Platinum, 128 with LEED Gold, 10 with LEED Silver, and 4 certified factories.

The newly certified green factories are Ecotex Limited in Kaliakoir, Gazipur; Euro Knit Spin Limited in Sreepur; and Elite Garments Industries Limited in Board Bazar. Both Euro Knit Spin and Elite Garments Industries scored 85 points to achieve Platinum certification, while Ecotex received a Platinum rating with 92 points.

USGBC grants the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification to sustainable buildings based on strict environmental standards. A project must maintain the highest standards in design, construction, and operations to qualify. The certification process involves a total of 110 points across nine criteria—Platinum requires 80+ points, Gold requires 60-79, Silver 50-59, and basic certification 40-49 points.
