India has decided to remove the 20% export duty on onions, effective from April 1, according to a Reuters report on March 22.

The Narendra Modi government made this decision nearly five months after imposing restrictions, including setting a minimum export price, to ensure adequate domestic supply. The 20% export duty had been in effect since September 13 last year.

New Delhi stated that this move aligns with the government’s commitment to ensuring fair prices for farmers while also making onions more affordable for consumers.

Previously, on May 4 last year, India had imposed a 40% export duty and set a minimum price of $550 per ton. This 40% duty remained in effect until September, when it was reduced to 20% ahead of the Maharashtra state elections. Now, starting April 1, the duty will be completely removed.
