Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) exports to the United States recorded a strong rebound in August, rising 25.65% year-on-year after experiencing declines during the first six months of 2026.

According to data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Bangladesh exported more than $817 million worth of garments to the US market in August alone.

The latest figures show that Bangladesh exported $1.61 billion worth of apparel to the United States during the first two months of the current fiscal year (July–August), marking an 11.42% increase compared with the same period of the previous fiscal year.

US Remains Bangladesh’s Largest Single Apparel Market

The United States continues to be Bangladesh’s largest single-country export destination for ready-made garments.

During the 2025-26 fiscal year, Bangladesh exported more than $7.74 billion worth of garments to the US market.

However, data from the US Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA) showed that Bangladesh’s garment exports to the United States declined 5.75% during the first six months of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier.

Exporters See Mixed Outlook

Bangladeshi garment exporters have expressed mixed views regarding future demand from the US market.

Some industry leaders remain cautious, while others believe exports could continue to recover if geopolitical tensions do not worsen and domestic energy supplies improve.

Rakibul Alam Chowdhury, Managing Director of Chattogram-based exporter HKC Apparels Ltd., said the company is receiving stronger orders from US buyers compared with previous months.

He noted that a stable geopolitical environment and improved gas and electricity supplies in Bangladesh could help accelerate the recovery.

Industry Leaders Hope for Further Growth

Despite the recent rebound, some exporters believe the US market has not yet fully returned to normal.

Abdullah Hil Nakib, Deputy Managing Director of leading apparel exporter Team Group, said current market conditions remain challenging and have not fully recovered.

Meanwhile, Mohiuddin Rubel, Chief Executive Officer of Bangladesh Apparel Exchange, said that if the current export momentum continues over the next 12 months, Bangladesh’s garment exports to the United States could approach $9 billion during the 2026-27 fiscal year.

Industry observers say future performance will depend largely on global economic conditions, consumer demand in key markets, geopolitical developments, and Bangladesh’s ability to maintain uninterrupted energy supplies for manufacturers.
