Marvel’s latest superhero film, Fantastic Four: First Steps, has held onto the top position at the North American box office for a second consecutive week, though its earnings dropped significantly. After an impressive $117.6 million debut last weekend, the movie’s revenue fell by 66% this weekend, bringing in $40 million—a steeper decline compared to DC’s Superman, which saw a 53% drop in its second weekend.

The Fantastic Four sequel’s domestic total over 10 days now stands at $198.4 million, just shy of its $200 million target. Meanwhile, Superman, in its fourth week, has surpassed a global gross of $551.2 million, including $300 million in North America—the first DC film in three years to reach this figure.

Internationally, Fantastic Four performed better, earning $39.6 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $368.7 million, with $170.3 million from outside the U.S. In comparison, Superman has earned $235 million abroad so far.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys 2 opened strongly with $22.2 million domestically, marking the second-best animated debut of the year. This sequel nearly matched the original film’s $23 million opening in 2022, which eventually grossed $250 million worldwide. Directed by Pierre Perifel and produced by Damon Ross, the film features returning voices such as Sam Rockwell and Awkwafina, alongside newcomers including Zazie Beetz and Natasha Lyonne. The plot centers on the reformed animal outlaws confronting a new villainous gang known as “The Bad Girls.”

Paramount’s reboot of The Naked Gun, starring Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., opened to $17 million domestically and $28.5 million worldwide, exceeding expectations. This $40 million action-comedy marks Neeson’s first major comedic role and follows 31 years after the last franchise installment. The film received an “A” CinemaScore, indicating positive audience reception. Produced by Seth MacFarlane and directed by Akiva Schaffer, the cast includes Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, and Cody Rhodes.

This release is also notable as Paramount Pictures’ final theatrical film before its upcoming $8 billion merger with Skydance, led by David Ellison, scheduled for August 7. Following the merger, current studio chief Brian Robbins is expected to step down.

Elsewhere at the box office, Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth, produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin, remains in the top five, earning $8.7 million over the weekend and reaching a domestic total of $448.4 million and $766 million worldwide.

Neon’s indie horror-comedy Together, starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco, debuted with a modest $6.8 million over the weekend and a five-day total of $10.9 million, securing the sixth spot.
