At least 24 tourists were killed in a gunman attack in India’s Kashmir, in what authorities have described as one of the deadliest assaults on civilians in recent times. The incident took place in Pahalgam, a popular summer tourist destination about 90 kilometers from Srinagar. Indian police confirmed the attack on Tuesday, according to AFP.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack, calling it a heinous act and vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice. A local tour guide, Wahid, told AFP he rushed to the scene after hearing gunshots and found several people lying motionless on the ground, appearing to be dead. He helped evacuate some of the wounded by horse.
A senior police official, speaking anonymously, confirmed the death toll to be at least 24. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the massacre. The attack occurred during the four-day visit of U.S. Vice President JD Vance to India, who met with Prime Minister Modi just a day before the incident.
