A nine-year-old girl who was injured by gunfire coming from across the Myanmar border in Cox’s Bazar has died after nearly four weeks of treatment. Huzaifa Sultana passed away at around 9 a.m. on Saturday, 27 days after being shot. She had been receiving care at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka.

The child was wounded on January 11 when a bullet fired from the direction of Myanmar struck her in Teknaf’s Hwaikyang Union. Local officials and family members confirmed her death. Huzaifa was the daughter of Jasim Uddin from Techchibridge village in the same union.

Speaking later in the day, Hwaikyang Union’s acting chairman said Huzaifa’s uncle was in Cox’s Bazar and would travel by air to Dhaka to receive the body before returning home. He said the child’s death had left the local community in shock.

According to multiple sources along the border, heavy fighting broke out on the Myanmar side of the frontier in Rakhine State on the day Huzaifa was injured. The clashes involved the Arakan Army and several Rohingya armed groups, while Myanmar’s military also carried out air and bomb attacks in the area. During the violence, a bullet crossed the border and hit the child.

After the incident, local residents rushed Huzaifa to the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, where she was given first aid. She was then transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital and placed in intensive care.

Doctors later said the bullet had penetrated her brain, leaving her in critical condition. Although surgery was performed, the projectile could not be removed due to the high risk involved. Medical teams continued treatment to reduce pressure on her brain, but her condition did not improve.
