Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed support for a return to the terms of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the United States and Iran in June, according to China’s state-run news agency Xinhua.

Speaking during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday morning local time, Xi said he supports efforts to restore the framework of the agreement, which had aimed to halt hostilities and create conditions for broader peace negotiations.

The June memorandum included provisions to end fighting, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, lift a U.S. naval blockade, and launch discussions toward a more durable peace arrangement. However, the agreement became ineffective after hostilities resumed, leaving diplomatic efforts stalled.

Since then, negotiations have remained at an impasse. China, which maintains significant economic and trade ties with Iran, has long been viewed as a potential mediator capable of helping revive dialogue between Washington and Tehran.

During the meeting, Xi also addressed the issue of Taiwan, emphasizing China’s long-standing position on territorial sovereignty.

According to Xinhua, the Chinese leader told Trump that China’s stance on territorial integrity remains clear and urged the United States to oppose Taiwan independence and handle the issue prudently.

The United States has traditionally sought to balance its support for self-governed Taiwan with broader diplomatic relations with Beijing. China, meanwhile, continues to regard Taiwan as an inseparable part of its territory.

The discussions highlighted two of the most sensitive issues in U.S.-China relations, as both countries navigate geopolitical tensions while seeking areas of potential cooperation.
