A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Iran is ready to give the United States another opportunity to resolve the long-standing disputes between the two nations, following President Trump’s reactivation of his “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran. The official emphasized that Tehran remains committed to diplomacy but is concerned about Israeli interference, urging the U.S. to curb Israel’s actions if it is seeking a deal with Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi also remarked that U.S. worries about Iran developing nuclear weapons were solvable, given Iran’s stance against weapons of mass destruction.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, indicated his preference for a verified nuclear peace agreement with Iran. His “maximum pressure” strategy includes trying to reduce Iranian oil exports to zero in an attempt to prevent the country from acquiring nuclear weapons, though Iran maintains that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes.
The situation has grown more complicated for Iran, as the fall of key regional allies and internal economic challenges leave Tehran with fewer options but to engage in negotiations with the U.S. Tehran’s regional influence has been diminished since the Gaza conflict and the weakening of its “Axis of Resistance,” which was meant to counter U.S. and Israeli power in the Middle East.
Iran’s position on the displacement of Palestinians in Gaza is clear, with the official stating that Iran opposes any such actions, though it sees the issue as separate from nuclear discussions with the U.S. The official insisted that both matters should be addressed independently.
