A total of 952 police officers, both former and current, have been charged in connection with the killings and attempted killings of students during anti-discrimination protests. Among them, the most cases are against Harun Ar Rashid, the former head of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB), with 171 cases filed against him. The second-highest number of cases is against former Inspector General of Police, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who has 155 cases. Despite accusations of fleeing the country, Abdullah Al-Mamun voluntarily surrendered after spending over 50 days in remand and is currently in prison.
Other notable individuals with multiple cases include former DMPI Commissioner Habibur Rahman (117 cases), Additional DIG Biplob Kumar Sarkar (125 cases), former Additional IGP Monirul Islam (46 cases), and Additional DIG SM Mehedi Hassan (31 cases). Police sources confirm these details.
While 952 police officers are named in these cases, only 28 have been arrested so far. It is reported that many others have either fled the country or gone into hiding. However, the police state that anyone found connected to the incidents will be brought to justice. A detailed analysis reveals that those implicated include six former police chiefs, 36 former additional police chiefs, five additional IGPs, several DIGs, and other officers ranging from superintendents to constables.
Former IGP Muhammad Nurul Huda emphasized that police should use force in public interest and within the legal framework. He called for a quick conclusion of investigations into the cases, noting the chaotic situation arising from the delays, which could negatively impact the morale of the police force.
