The High Court has issued a rule questioning why unused internet data, minutes, and SMS from one mobile phone package are not carried over to the next package after its validity expires. The bench, consisting of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmoodur Razi, issued the rule on Sunday. The Department of Posts and Telecommunications Secretary, along with the Chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and other relevant authorities, have been asked to respond within four weeks. The rule followed a petition filed after no action was taken in response to a legal notice sent to mobile phone companies on January 13, requesting that unused data, minutes, and SMS be carried over to subsequent packages. The petition argues that, by law, unused mobile data should be combined with newly purchased data, but mobile phone companies are not adhering to this rule, leaving the unused data, minutes, and SMS non-transferable.
