The full verdict of the High Court has been published in the case of the murder of Abrar Fahad, a student at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), confirming death sentences for 20 accused and life imprisonment for 5 others. On March 16, the High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayetur Rahman upheld the original trial court judgment after hearings on death references, appeals, and jail appeals filed by the convicts. Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at BUET, was found dead on October 6, 2019, at the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall. His father filed a murder case with Chawkbazar Police Station, and on November 13, 2019, police submitted a chargesheet against 25 BUET students. On December 8, 2021, the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 in Dhaka delivered the verdict, stating that the accused, acting on false and fabricated accusations of Abrar’s alleged political affiliations, brutally beat him to death in a coordinated and inhumane manner. Among the 20 sentenced to death are Mehedi Hasan Russell, Md. Anik Sarker, Mehedi Hasan Robin, Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, Md. Moniruzzaman Monir, Md. Meftahul Islam Jion, Md. Mazedur Rahman Mazed, Md. Mujahidur Rahman, Khandakar Tabakkarul Islam Tanvir, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Md. Shamim Billah, ASM Nazmus Sadat, Morshed Amartya Islam, Muntasir Al Jemi, Md. Shamsul Arefin Rafat, Md. Notably, death-row convict Muntasir Al Jemi escaped from Gazipur’s high-security prison by breaking through a wall on August 6 of last year.
