A new tribunal is being established alongside the existing tribunal at the Old High Court Building to address crimes against humanity, such as murder, genocide, and enforced disappearances, committed during anti-discrimination movements. The structural work for this second tribunal has commenced, aiming to ensure efficient and expedited trials.
On Sunday, December 29, a prosecution team led by Prosecutor BM Sultan Mahmud visited the site for the second tribunal, as well as the location of the first tribunal. During the visit, Sultan Mahmud mentioned the possibility of forming the second tribunal and emphasized the need for additional infrastructure to manage the widespread nature of crimes against humanity across the country. He stated that over 300 complaints have been submitted, with 168 of them forwarded to investigation agencies after initial review.
Notably, allegations have been made against Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India following the mass uprising on August 5. While several charges have been filed, only one case of genocide and crimes against humanity has been registered against her so far. On November 13, the tribunal’s Chief Prosecutor’s office formally requested Interpol to issue a Red Notice for her arrest.
The International Crimes Tribunal was initially established in 2010, with its operations beginning on March 25 of the same year. A second tribunal, known as Tribunal-2, was introduced on March 22, 2012, but both were merged into a single entity on September 15, 2015. In 2024, the government initiated efforts to reintroduce a tribunal to address crimes committed during anti-discrimination movements, appointing Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder as its chairman on October 14.
