Three Killed, Over Fifty Injured in Earthquake

Many residents of Sutrapur rushed outdoors in panic when the earthquake struck this morning.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), three people died and more than fifty were injured in Friday morning’s tremor, with casualties reported in Dhaka, Narsingdi, and Gazipur.
Abu Hossain Md Mainul Ahsan, Director (Hospitals and Clinics) at the DGHS, said that three injured individuals who had been taken to Sir Salimullah Medical College & Mitford Hospital later died during treatment. One of the victims has been identified as Rafiul Islam, a second-year student of Dhaka Medical College.
Mitford Hospital’s emergency ward master, Sazzad, told reporters that the bodies of three victims were brought in from Old Dhaka following the quake. Among the victims were Rafiul, Sabuj, a 30-year-old man, and an unidentified 8-year-old child.
Lalbagh Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Mallik Ahsan Uddin said a railing collapsed from a building in the Kosaituli area of Old Dhaka during the quake, killing three pedestrians on the spot. Police and fire service personnel inspected the site, though their identities were not immediately confirmed at the time.
The DGHS reported that 10 people were injured and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while another 10 were treated at Tajuddin Medical College Hospital in Gazipur.
In Narsingdi, 45 people were brought to the district hospital, three of whom were later transferred to Dhaka in critical condition. Another 10 injured individuals received treatment at the 100-bed Narsingdi Hospital.
Officials said all casualty updates were received via telephone.
During a ground visit, bloodstains were still visible on KP Ghosh Street in Kosaituli, where firefighters were clearing the collapsed railing from a five-storey building.
A local resident, Sajib, said, “Everyone started running when the quake hit. Three people, including a child, were badly hurt here and were rushed to the hospital.”
Enamul Haque, Zone Commander of Fire Service Dhaka (Sadar Zone 1), said responders were checking the building to ensure no one was trapped inside.
